The Courage to Be Unconventional

“Versatility” is a term that’s often overused—but for Lisa Kühnemann, it defines her approach: classical vocal training, a successful degree in jazz and pop at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Cologne, vocal soloist, ensemble singer, composer, vocal coach, choir director… and a constant stream of new inspiration from travel, encounters, and diverse musical styles ranging from 1920s pop to Latin and jazz to vocal improvisation. And finally: her very personal songwriting in her own band, Schiefsinn.

Lisa Kühnemann first encountered jazz and pop singing during a year of social service in Nicaragua. After her first semester of study in Bogotá (Colombia), she began her studies in jazz and pop singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Cologne under Anette von Eichel and Susanne Schneider. Since a sabbatical in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and New York, the American continent has remained an important source of inspiration.

In 2022, she successfully completed the “Lichtenberger® Method” program at the Lichtenberger Institute for Applied Voice Physiology. In 2022 and 2023, she deepened her studies in vocal improvisation with Rhiannon, one of the leading figures in the international improvisation scene, as part of “All the Way In” in Hawaii, Perugia, and Montreal.

Since successfully completing her studies in 2014, Lisa Kühnemann has made a name for herself with her own band and, as a sought-after solo and ensemble singer, has demonstrated the full range of her talents. Among her musical collaborators is the vocal quartet Femmes Fatales, in which Lisa Kühnemann has been able to fully embrace the repertoire of the “Roaring Twenties” since 2017, not only vocally but also through her stage presence as an actress.

Since 2024, she has been a guest singer with the Glenn Miller Orchestra. She was a member of the improvisational collective Vokalorchester NRW until 2026 and also served as its musical director. She drew artistic inspiration from collaborations with Rhiannon, Theo Bleckmann, Martin Fondse, and Lauren Newton, among others.

As a vocal instructor, Lisa Kühnemann teaches at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and at the University of Cologne, and works as a voice coach in the field of music education for the WDR.
